Top 20 Questions for an Expat

This is not an interview with one person – but the Top 20 questions that South Africans back home would like to ask expats (according to a survey compiled by The Expat Confessions). The emotions range from those who are angry and dismissive to those who are curious and envious. If you have some answers – or more questions of your own – please add to the comments below.

  1. 1. didn’t cop out. took up a job offer, met a woman, got married and stayed (in Warsaw Poland).
    2. don’t need to cast negative impressions of South Africa, the media does that.
    3. have nothing to come back for. most of my family have immigrated for various reasons.

  2. I had a Polish GF in Krakow…I don’t think most Poles believe Poland is heaven…Met one just last weekend here in China, who immigrated to SA 10 years ago.
    He is going to rent his house out in Jozi during the World Cup for 1 000USD a day !
    I think he is far happier being a Saffa now !

    I never said a bad word about the new SA…I love it !!

    It was, I learned a lot I can apply in the New SA !

    Well, China is so full of problems…

    As we said before, there was also Apartheid, war, civil strife, no Playboy, mandatory church at school, etc etc…ad neaseam…

    10. If you had only a year to live, would you want to spend your last days in South Africa or not?

    Yes

    11. Is life over there really more boring than in South Africa? Do you miss the thrill of living in a changing, diverse, challenging, sometimes scary place?

    China is pretty boring and predictable…some places in Asia are fun though…but the quality of life is terrible…

    12. Are you holistically satisfied living in your new culture and do you miss Africa and your friends, as you only have one life?

    I miss Africa…

    13. Do you really have a better life now? Is the grass really greener?

    Yes and no…

    14. What’s it really like on the other side?

    Asia was exciting at first, big, busy and new, now not so much…the pollution, massive crowds, traffic gridlock, lack of space, lack of anything fresh, that starts to wear you down…

    China is not safe, and Shenzhen and Guangdong Province has to be the most criminalized place in the world, bar none !!

    You could never integrate here…

    Here you have the constant threat of robberies, corruption, fraud, kidnappings and what else !!
