The daughter of the skipper who was saved in yesterday morning’s dramatic rescue operation in the Port of St Francis, Eastern Cape, has thanked all those who took part in the rescue of the 13 people aboard the Sikelela.

The 13 squid – or chokka as they are known in South Africa – fishermen were saved thanks to a quick response from fellow fishermen, the Transnet Port Authority and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI).

Their boat lost power while trying to enter the port during a large swell…and was swept towards the dolosse at the harbour mouth, finally hitting the rocks.

All 13 were finally rescued, and although treated for shock, most escaped without injury.

In a message posted on YouTube a few hours ago, Amber McKenna said: “A huge Thank You to the NSRI, Balobi fishing, Kevin Bremner, Shorts Humby and Lefran troksie, private care ambulance, EMS and every single person who was involved in helping rescue the crewmen and skipper who is my father, from the vessel Sikelela.

“Thank you from the bottom of my heart, you all did amazing work. God Bless you all x”
