There’s a spot about 1 km off of Durban called the Mound. When conditions are just right the wave that breaks there rolls all the way to the coast. Wayne Ashford and Herman Chalupsky caught this rare and awesome wave on Thursday on a double surfski. And, luckily for the rest of us, an onboard camera caught the action.

The Mound is located just outside the harbour. It’s an artifical sand bank caused by years of dumping by the sand dredgers. When the low tide coincides with a huge swell, then these waves break spectacularly on the Mound.

The waves on Thursday were 15-foot. The tide was low. It was perfect.

“The wave is extremely fast so only double surfski’s or surfers towed in by Jetski can catch the wave,” Robin Tindall, who uploaded these videos, wrote on YouTube.

Watch the action here as Wayne and Herman catch the giant wave, and then check the video below it for a perspective from the other side.

Robin Tindall – “Look carefully and you can see the surfer being towed in and he links right through to the back line…Apologies for the poor video quality.”
