“We can confirm that SAA was paid just after 14:00 on 1 April 2015,” said Mathonsi. “The air freight service has been resumed.”

SAA had suspended its contract with Sapo a couple of days ago as a result of unpaid bills.

The suspension, which lasted a couple of days, is not expected to have made much impact on the service.

Earlier this week Mathonsi told Fin24 that “while we are currently facing a difficult financial situation, we are making steady progress towards an improved position.”

The Post Office also confirmed yesterday that it has dismissed six employees who violated a court order during the illegal strike which “crippled postal operations in the last quarter of 2014” and from which Sapo is still recovering.

Mathonsi said Sapo has embarked on “spirited internal efforts” to encourage employees to improve their performance, avoid service disruptions and restore confidence amongst their customers.
