In an update on Facebook this evening Darren revealed that doctors gave him the good news today that they’ve “got whatever melanoma and potentially infected nodes in the excised lobe of my lung, and prognosis is good”.

Although Darren is still in CCU he says he is “really feeling good”, although “desperately missing my boys”. It’s been a week since he saw them, as children are not allowed in ICU “for obvious reasons”.

Darren is due to have a drain taken out his lungs today, which will leave just one more before he can leave ICU.

In typical South African fashion his mind has been on biltong (thanking David O’Sullivan for the “BEST biltong to ever come out of a cow”), hot curry (which he’d like after ICU) and rugby (joking that he was joined by Scottish patients with “VERY high blood pressure” after their loss to Australia on Sunday night)!

Known for his upbeat nature, Darren has been joking from ICU that post-op he felt like “someone parked a Jeep in between 2 of my ribs” and thanked the Boks for causing “a near relapse – you almost made me pull the rest of the lung out myself!”

Darren and his wife Sarah-Kate, former Mrs South Africa, have thanked the Milpark ICU for being “brilliant”.
