The talented musician – who took part in the first Free Nelson Mandela concert – was inspired to sing and perform after growing up in the shadow of her legendary father Nat ‘King’ Cole who died when she was just 15.

In 1988 she delivered a memorable performance – singing ‘Pink Cadillac’ – at the anti-apartheid concert for Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday, in London, when the former South African president was still in prison. (Watch below.)

Although she had other hits and won nine Grammy Awards altogether during her lifetime, it is her duet with her famous father, after his death, that will be remembered forever. The song – “Unforgettable…With Love” – was produced with recordings of her late dad…and won her six Grammys including both Album and Record of the Year in 1992. It sold at least 14 million units. Natalie, who passed away at Cedar Sinai Hospital, had overcome battles with substance abuse in the past. In 2009 she received a kidney transplant after developing hepatitis which she attributed to her earlier intravenous drug use.

According to reports the performer – who had also acted in “Touched by an Angel” and “Grey’s Anatomy” – recently cancelled planned concert dates.

Her family said in a statement: “It is with heavy hearts that we bring to you all the news of our Mother and sister’s passing. Natalie fought a fierce, courageous battle, dying how she lived … with dignity, strength and honour.”

They said: “Our beloved Mother and sister will be greatly missed and remain unforgettable in our hearts forever.”
