On the same day that President Jacob Zuma lashed out at the Democratic Alliance in parliament that he “never lied” about Nkandla (see video below), the DA posted a graphic of how much Zuma has cost the country during his term in office.

The DA graphic on Tuesday shows that GDP growth from 2009 has gone from 3 percent down to 1.3 percent (and is predicted to be only 0.6 percent in 2016).

But the most glaring feature of the seven years listed by the DA is that unemployment has risen from 6.7 million to almost 9 million. As journalist Justice Malala says in a report Wednesday, that’s higher than the unemployment rate in the US during the Great Depression.

“Think about that. Weigh it up in your head,” said Malala. “In South Africa today there are 8.9 million people who want to work, are able to work, and are not in work. Most of them are young people.

“In the run-up to the 1994 and 1999 elections, the ANC ran a campaign built around jobs. The party’s yellow posters screamed: ‘Jobs! Jobs! Jobs!’

“In the run-up to the 2009 election, Jacob Zuma’s election campaign was centred on the promise of jobs. We know now what a lie that was. In his tenure the unemployment rate has soared from just over 20% to the staggering 26.7% it is today.
