Former premier of Mpumalanga – and still an African National Congress member – Mathews Phosa has said in a wide-ranging interview that corruption is systemic in the ANC.

“It’s become systemic in municipal government, provincial government, national government,” said Phosa, one of the few high-profile ANC members to repeatedly criticise the party in public. He was talking to interviewer Melanie Verwoerd.

Watch the full interview:

“Instead of hitting corruption at the heart,” he said, “we are protecting one another. It’s a culture of impunity and immunity. And it’s wrong of the ANC to do that.”

Phosa said the Nkandla affair was “scandalous, from any angle you look at it”.

He said that after all that has happened – with the Constitutional Court and the public protector making pronouncements against the ANC – you had to ask yourself, “What has happened to the ANC?”
