A couple visiting the Kruger National Park in South Africa filmed a rare sighting of a pride of lions – including an endangered white lion – trying to hunt a porcupine.

Retired Beryl Salottolo told Nadav Ossendryver from Latest Sightings that she and her husband, Gules, set out early one morning from their camp at Satara to search for a pride of 12 lions which included an endangered white lion. They had been told the lions frequented the S100, a world-renowned road for lions.

By 07h30 they had spotted a few lions walking in the veld and when the lions crossed the road “we realised that we had found our white lion! They disappeared down the river bank only to reappear a few minutes later chasing a porcupine.”

The porcupine took cover under a vehicle in front of Beryl “and we were able to video this amazing interaction between it and the pride of lions.”

On a couple of occasions it appeared the porcupine was turning its back on the lions to shoot his quills and defend himself, but he didn’t. One lion did however have a quill stuck in its mouth, but managed to remove it without much damage.

Beryl believes the lions were more curious than out to kill – they finally lost interest and wandered back towards the river, and the porcupine made a safe getaway into a culvert underground after the vehicle it was hiding under drove away.

After uploading her video to Latest Sightings app, Beryl told Ossendryver: ““Shortly afterwards, at N’wanetsi Picnic site, we celebrated our sighting with a typical Kruger skottel breakfast. We were on an emotional high – not only had we witnessed a learning process for these young lions but we had also had the incredible privilege of seeing the much talked about white lion for the first time in our 46 years of visiting the park.”
