Congratulations to Mamelodi Sundowns – bringing home the African Champions League title Sunday night in Egypt for not only their club, but the whole of South Africa!

Although Sundowns lost the second leg of their CAF semifinal 1-0 to Zamalek in Alexandria tonight… they still secured the title 3-1 on aggregate.

It’s a massive boost for South African soccer, and many locals took to Twitter to say thank you, dankie and siyabonga to the team who are now officially the best on the continent. Kings of Africa!

The triumph not only makes the team a reported $1.5 million richer, but will open the door to many great opportunities… starting with a spot now in the FIFA Club World Cup during December in Japan.

Sundowns’ success is made even sweeter by the fact that they got a second chance to be in this championship. Back in April the South Africans were eliminated in the final qualifying round. But after their opponents, Democratic Republic of Congo, were disqualified’ Sundowns was reinstated.

By winning the hotly contested championship tonight, Sundowns are the first South African team to win the League title since Orlando Pirates did it in 1995.

Egyptian club Zamalek were fired up tonight – with support from most of the 60,000 fans in the stadium – but only managed one goal against Sundowns whose players remained unchanged from last week’s victorious team which beat Zamalek 3-0… with just Bangaly Soumahoro replacing Wayne Arendse.

Sundowns’ keeper, Denis Onyango, was also replaced (by Wayne Sandilands) during the first half due to injury.
