South Africans have been waiting all day with bated breath to find out whether a motion for President Jacob Zuma to step down would be passed. The motion of no-confidence was proposed by Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom on Saturday, at a scheduled ANC NEC meeting in Irene, Pretoria.

The meeting was meant to last two days, but on Sunday the ANC issued a statement that it would be extending the meeting to today.

According to reports in local media, sources have revealed that Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi, Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor and ANC chief whip, Jackson Mthembu, have joined Hanekom in calling for Zuma’s removal.

Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba, Sport and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula and African Union chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma are allegedly opposing the motion.

On Monday evening, the ANC issued an invitation to members of the media for a briefing on the outcomes of the meeting of the NEC, held at St. George’s Hotel.

The briefing will take place at Chief Albert Luthuli House in Joburg at 14h00 on Tuesday 29 November 2016.

According to insiders, Zuma is expected to survive the No-Confidence vote.
