Locals and tourists flocked to beaches around South Africa on New Year’s Day, 1 January 2017, to start the year with a fabulous day of family, friends and fun… Tragically, while most did enjoy the day – there were at least six fatal drownings reported in the West and Eastern Cape, including that of a 5-year-old child; several people hospitalised, and a 25-year-old woman was reportedly murdered on Muizenberg Beach at around 16h00. Police said the victim was stabbed, and they are searching for several suspects.

Apart from the drownings, NSRI attended to multiple other incidents – from a 36-year-old man being bitten on the face by another man at a restaurant in Melkbosstrand (now recovering in hospital) to dolphins swimming upstream of the Bushmans River, Port Alfred (they swam back to sea during the night).

NSRI commended tourists – including a couple from Britain – who assisted in the rescue of three people in Jeffrey’s Bay who had been swept out to sea by rip currents. Sadly a fourth man (54), from Port Elizabeth, passed away despite resuscitation efforts. His brother-in-law and two nephews were taken to hospital.

Rieghard Janse van Rensburg, NSRI Jeffreys Bay station commander, said: “We also dealt with six cases of lost children on the beach yesterday. Five were reunited with family and one was taken into the care of the SA Police Services (SAPS) and handed into the care of child care.”

As on other beaches, SAPS’ Mounted Unit in East London conducted visible patrols to ensure a #SaferFestiveSeason… which included not only tending to regular water and beach incidents… but also the discovery yesterday of a plastic bag with 72 stacks of counterfeit notes, hidden by the sand dunes.
