As predicted, American President Elect Donald Trump has woken up this morning and reacted to major media coverage of Hollywood actress Meryl Streep’s Golden Globes speech, with a derogatory tweet labelling her as “over-rated”.
During her acceptance speech for the Lifetime Achievement Award in America Sunday night, Streep addressed Trump’s “instinct to humiliate”. Without mentioning his name, she referred to an occasion when he “mimicked” a disabled person, and warned of the danger when someone powerful on a public platform engages in humiliation… that it filters into everyone’s life and “gives permission”. She said “disrespect invites disrespect”.
Whilst denying her allegation, Trump inadvertently proved her point. His response was an instinct to humiliate! Trump tweeted: “Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn’t know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes. She is a…..”
He didn’t stop there. He called her a “Hillary flunky who lost big”.
He explained that “for the 100th time, I never ‘mocked’ a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him… ‘groveling’ when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad. Just more very dishonest media!”
