Hooters restaurant in Port Elizabeth has introduced the ‘Order an Angel Shot’ initiative to its female customers who are feeling unsafe or “a bit weird” on a date.

The poster lets women know certain code words to use at the bar if they feel they are in danger or unsafe on a date. The staff are (presumably) trained to know that if a woman asks for an Angel Shot “neat” then she’d like to be escorted to her car; and if she asks for it “with lime”, then she needs the police called asap.

The sexual violence awareness campaign began in the UK last year. The very first bar – the Brickyard in St Albans – advised women to ask for “Rachel or Jennifer” (based on ‘Friends’ hit TV show). Its popularity spread and morphed into a successful ‘Ask for Angela’ campaign. It then made its way to the USA where it became ‘Angel Shots’.

DA councillor Renaldo Gouws posted a photo of the poster in the Port Elizabeth restaurant, saying: “This has been put up in the Ladies bathroom. Very cool initiative from Hooters. Respect!”
