There’s good news in South Africa as the South African Weather Services (SAWS) says Dineo is weaker than predicted and has been downgraded. The weather system is now called “Tropical Depression Ex-Dineo”. UPDATE: The South African government has issued a WARNING to South Africans as Dineo approaches.

As predicted, the cyclone lost much of its energy when it hit landfall and no longer had the heat from the ocean to feed its growth.

Dineo stormed into Mozambique yesterday with strong winds which were expected to reach over 200km/hour. Trees were uprooted, rooves torn off and extensive damage was wreaked upon infrastructure (buildings and homes).

This morning the winds had died down to 80 km/hour.

Residents in the affected areas are still warned to stay on high alert and preferably remain indoors and keep off the roads.

Ex-Dineo is expected to hit South Africa and Zimbabwe later today. Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal have prepared for possible flooding and heavy rains.

What to do if you’re caught in Cyclone Dineo (or any flood or severe storm):

  • Remain indoors if possible.
  • Stay off the roads and avoid crossing rivers and swollen streams.
  • If trapped in flooding in a vehicle, abandon it and climb to higher ground.
  • In the buildings, move valuables to a safe place above the expected flood level.
  • Switch off electricity at the supply point to the building.
  • In rural areas protect/relocate animals to a safe place on higher ground.
  • Abandon your home immediately if evacuation is recommended, before access is cut off by flood water.
  • Never drive on a road covered by water. If the vehicle stalls, leave it immediately and seek higher ground.
  • Be especially cautious at night when it’s harder to recognize flood dangers. Listen to the radio or TV for warnings and obey the instructions from disaster management officers.
