South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Thulani Zwane has confirmed that the missing Durban baby has thankfully been found.

Speaking to East Coast Radio (ECR) just after 04h00 Sunday morning, Zwane said: “I can confirm that the one-month-old baby, who was missing, has been found… and she is still alive.” (Listen here.)

He said: “We managed to intercept a vehicle along the Marianhill Toll Plaza and the N3, where we found the vehicle. After we searched the vehicle we found the one-month-old baby, and the suspects were arrested, and the matter is still under investigation. Those who were arrested – they are in custody right now.”

Baby Siwaphiwe Mbambo was apparently abducted on Friday at about 11h45 after her mother’s car was allegedly hijacked by armed robbers at an intersection in Durban, near Game City. The mother and her eight-year-old son were said to have been forced at gunpoint out of the car, before the robbers fled with the vehicle and baby still inside it.

The white Toyota Yaris was later discovered abandoned in Montclair. Baby Siwaphiwe and her baby seat were no longer in the car.

After a massive search to find baby – including the deployment of 100 police officers – Zwane said they were “very happy” to have successfully found the baby alive.

He thanked all those who assisted in the investigation from the SA Police officers to the KwaZulu-Natal community members. “We were working together as one,” he said.

The Sowetan reports that an unnamed police source has confirmed the baby’s mother has been arrested.
