Video footage has emerged of the South African police officers’ hot pursuit of the hijackers who murdered Stellenbosch student, Hannah Cornelius, in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The CCTV footage shows the suspects in the stolen blue Citi Golf being chased by police, before they jump out of the car and attempt to run away on foot.
Two of the suspects – both in their 30s – were arrested at this time in Devon Valley. Police confirmed on Sunday they had arrested one more suspect. A fourth is still missing. It’s believed the stolen car had also been used in a robbery near Northpine before the police set chase.
Hannah (21) and a male student companion had been sitting talking in the car when they were hijacked outside an apartment block in Bird Street, Stellenbosch, between 03h00 and 06h00 on Saturday. Four men reportedly forced their way into the car using a screwdriver to open the back door.
The male student was forced into the boot. They were robbed and driven to Kraaifontein were the male student was allegedly assaulted with bricks. He apparently managed to escape by jumping over a wall. Barefoot and bloodied, he knocked desperately on a local couple’s back door. Before they could let him in, they were able to stop a passing police vehicle… which then took the seriously wounded student to hospital. He has reportedly suffered head injuries.
Hannah’s body was later found on the side of the road between Kraaifontein and Stellenbosch. She had apparently been stabbed several times with a sharp object before being strangled. Police say they have not yet ruled out rape.
Hannah was a second year BA student from Scarborough, near Simon’s Town – where her father is Chief Magistrate, and her mother is a lawyer. Through Hannah’s uncle, Andries Cornelius, the family asked for privacy, and said the incredible support they have received is testament to the “wonderful, loving and beautiful person Hannah was”.
The three suspects are expected to appear in court in Stellenbosch today.
