Kevin Pietersen has announced he will be quitting English cricket at the end of this summer to become more involved in wildlife conservation in South Africa.

Kevin – who turns 37 next week – is reportedly building a new house near the Kruger National Park.

“I reckon this will be my last season playing in England. Next year I am building a house and the whole of the English summer I will be at my house in South Africa so I will not be back in England,” he told reporters in the UK.

“My conservation work is at the time when I should be playing here and that work is more important to me.”

In the last couple of years Kevin has become a voice for the rhino, speaking out about the illegal trade in rhino horns, and plastering his bat in Australia (where he plays for the Melbourne Stars) with stickers dedicated to saving rhinos from poachers.

Kevin said he loves Surrey and looks forward to this last season. He said that as long as he’s fit and enjoying batting (which he is) he will continue playing cricket, just not county cricket.

He has signed up as an overseas player in the new South Africa T20 Global league (which was launched on Monday in London) and still has two years to go on his contract with the Melbourne Stars.

Yesterday Kevin posted a photo on Instagram using the new Spartan KP Rhino 1 English Willow Cricket Bat – which he has endorsed and helped design; and said: “Love this! Batting for rhinos for the rest of my playing days. At least another 2yrs!”
