Tomorrow is Mandela Day. It’s Nelson Mandela’s birthday and it’s a time where communities in South Africa celebrate all Mandela did for the Rainbow Nation.

This year’s Winnie Mabaso (children’s orphanage) Mandela Day appeal is for gardening tools and seeds – and also for volunteers to come to Meriting to help plant additional community gardens.

“We have a great day lined up, including a motivational talk from Gina Shoemaker of Green Earth Landscaping,” says founder Lisa Ashton.

“There will be gardening activities for the whole community. Story time and arts and crafts for the children will take on a gardening theme and we will even be having a cooking demonstration.”

All are welcome to come and join as the foundation, which helps orphaned and vulnerable children, honours Mandela and all he stood for.

Activities begin from 0930 tomorrow morning and will last all day.

Blue Ribbon Bread has donated  1,000 sandwiches for the special day.

If you are not in SA but would still like to support, donations can be made – www.WinnieMabaso.org

“Every penny will help our community to help themselves by growing their own produce. Each garden costs £25 (that includes training, fencing, seeds and tools) Please spread the word! THANK YOU! #mabasolove” says Lisa.
