A group of children from South Africa and the United Kingdom (UK) have written a letter to the Minister of Environment, Dr Edna Molewa, begging her to stop the trade in rhino horn.

The children – from Kids Against Poaching (@TheCrashKids) – have sent the letter to the Department of Environmental Affairs AND tweeted a copy to TV personality and ‘Stroop’ rhino documentary film-maker, Bonne de Bod, asking her to hand-deliver the letter to the Minister during her forthcoming press briefing to outline the progress in the government’s fight against rhino poaching.

The briefing was scheduled for Sunday but has been postponed to Monday, in Cape Town.

The Kids Against Poaching letter to Edna Molewa reads as follows:

Dear Minister Molewa

We are a group of children from SA and the UK that are working together to create awareness about the terrible poaching crisis. This is not only a South African problem but a global problem.

The selling of rhino horn creates a world full of crime and we are helping to support crime by allowing this. We already have so much crime in our country and we cannot (Azaria Ragbar) afford to create more crime. They have as much right to walk and breathe on this earth as we do.

We are responsible. We don’t want to be the generation who didn’t stop it when we could. (Ashton Rodger). We want to preserve rhinos for future generations. (Britney Baher) Our future generations must be able to see rhinos. (Tamra Thurston) Rhinos are not just animals for show, they are part of the heritage and history of not just South Africa but the WORLD!

Rhinos were here even before we were, so they need to stay here for generations to come!! (Melissa Poynon).

The letter is signed by Kotlego Thobejane Ashton Rodger Azaria Ragbar and Ariya Naido

Beneath the signatures, the kids have written: “Please, Please, Please can you stop the rhino horn trade. We all need to work together and you are our only hope. Thank you for reading our letter.”
