He was found in his New York apartment, dead from an apparent drug overdose, less than 24-hours after his representatives released a statement saying that reports of his death on Saturday were a hoax.

Hoffman had checked himself into rehab last May for an apparent addiction to heroin after 23 years of being clean.

The actor – who was recently seen in ‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ as game-inventor Plutarch Heavensbee – was allegedly found in the bathroom of his Greenwich Village apartment with a hypodermic needle still in his arm and heroin besides him, according to some reports.

He was found by his personal assistant who called 911. Hoffman had moved into the apartment recently, out of the apartment he shared with his long-term partner Mimi O’Donnell and their son and two daughters. The apartments are just three blocks apart.

He was best known for his lead role in 2005’s ‘Capote’, for which he won Best Actor Oscar. He also starred in ‘Boogie Nights’ opposite Mark Wahlberg, the Coen brothers’ ‘The Big Lebowski’, and ‘Mission Impossible III’ with Tom Cruise, amongst others.

Hoffman was also the recipient of three Tony Award nominations for roles in Broadway plays, and three Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor.

He had recently been filming ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2’.
