As predicted, the majority party in South Africa’s fifth National Assembly is the African National Congress (ANC), with a total of 249 of the 400 seats.

The DA has won 89 seats, and the EFF 25.

Mosotho Moepya, CEO of the IEC, thanked all voters for their “passion, patience and participation” in the Elections; and thanked the Commission and almost 220,000 staff members for their selfless work.

Moepya added poignantly that “our national anthem is not just a song, it’s a prayer: God Bless South Africa”.

The IEC began the Results ceremony by announcing that they could confirm that democracy is “alive and well and thriving” in South Africa as the country celebrates two decades of democracy.

Tlakula said of the 18 million South Africans who voted in the Elections that there is no more tangible symbol of “nationhood and inclusivity” than this participation in an election, and extended gratitude to the voters for making their voices heard.

“I hereby, on behalf of the Electoral Commission, declare the 2014 National and Provincial Elections free and fair,” says Tlakula.
