Trevor Noah Toasts Glam Life of New York…But Won’t Forget His Roots

Trevor Noah was trending on Twitter in South Africa this weekend in the Top 3, and nobody really knew why. But it could be that South Africa’s adjusting to Trevor leaving our shores for the bright lights and big city of New York and the world. In between tweets asking why Trevor was trending, were tweets about how he’s deserted South Africa…and how he’s inspired South Africans.

It may have been triggered on Saturday night by photos Trevor posted of himself in front of a helicopter (or “the chopper” as the super-rich call them) and in a limousine with Hollywood actor Jamie Foxx.

Or it could have been that he won two awards at the South African Comics’ Choice Awards – Flying Solo Comic and Comic of the Year.

Or…that he was too busy in New York – at a show with Jamie Foxx – to receive the awards in person!

A lot of jokes were made by fellow comedians at the show about Trevor’s absence. And ZA News made a video with Trevor’s puppet accepting the Comic of the Year award to the tune of “Unforgettable”…but sung to the words “Unaffordable” (see below). The parody video refers to Trevor’s fees skyrocketing since he’s become an international celebrity who will soon step in as host of America’s popular “The Daily Show”.

Tweets ranged from those who said Trevor would forget South Africa and all of us (unlikely…especially since so much of his repertoire is based on his South African experience!) to those who thanked Trevor for flying the flag for SA overseas and said things like: “Respect my man Trevor!  Keep making the ceiling higher. Thank you for showing South Africans what we can achieve.”

Reading the tweets, it’s clear that watching Trevor Noah move to New York and step into the global limelight is a bittersweet moment for South Africans, like parents watching  their child graduate – that mixture of pride as their kid makes it,  and sadness as we’re left behind with an empty nest-like feeling.

Meanwhile in the USA – they’ve been adjusting too. TV shows and magazines have been clamouring to interview the South African comedian, and Trevor Noah videos have been shared on YouTube as Americans try to “get to know” the man who will replace Jon Stewart and step into their living rooms (well, onto their TV screens) on 28 September 2015.

We’ll miss Trevor Noah. But one thing’s for sure. He’ll miss us too. He’s sure to be back as often as he can. And he’s going to need South Africans – and our support – as he embarks on this wildly exciting, but hugely challenging, chapter of his life! #GoTrevor! #KeepLivingTheDream #InspiringSouthAfricansAndTheWorld!
