CAPE TOWN – Vandals using a power tool sawed the nose off a bronze bust of Cecil John Rhodes at Rhodes Memorial on the slopes of Devil’s Peak, a news report said today.

A spokesman for Table Mountain National Park said on Monday that security at the monument had been increased after the vandalism. The report said parks staff have also been cleaning graffiti scrawled on the monument in the incident. One slogan read: “Your dreams of empire will die”.

Police said they were investigating a case of “malicious damage to property”.

In April, the University of Cape Town removed a statue of Rhodes on the campus after protests by students who described it as an emblem of white privilege.
