A movie set in the Johannesburg township of Alexandra, ‘Thina Sobabili’, is hoping to be nominated for the foreign movie section of the next Academy Awards.

‘Thina Sobabili’, meaning ‘The Two of Us’, is by first-time director Ernest Nkosi, according to Variety magazine. The nomination was announced on Monday by the South African Academy Awards selection committee and the National Film and Video Foundation.

Two South African movies have made it through to the foreign motives category for an Oscar, ‘Yesterday’ in 2005 and ‘Tsotsi’ in 2006. Nominations will be announced on January 14, 2016, and the Academy Awards take place February 28.

In the movie,Thulas will do anything to protect his sister, Zanele, after witnessing her abuse as a child. As a result, the two share a very strained relationship and when Zanele finally falls for the charms of an older man, Thulas is determined to protect his sister by putting an end to their relationship. A decision that will cost him everything and prove to his sister how much he really loves her.
