Earthquakes Hit Johannesburg (California, That Is)

The tiny town of Johannesburg in California doesn’t often make the news, but it did earlier Saturday when a magnitude 3.7 earthquake hit the area, followed by one of 3.8, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquakes were fairly minor, and no damage was reported, although they did feature on several U.S. news reports.

Johannesburg, an old mining town, is some 26 miles northwest of the bigger town of Barstow.

The population of the town was 180 in 2010, although in its more lively days it was also the terminus of the Randsburg Railway, a 28-mile branch line that came from Kramer Junction. (See more South African town names that have made it to the U.S. and France.)
