More than 800,000 students will receive their results on Tuesday night (with the Western Cape coming the following day), although early warnings by the education monitoring agency Umalusi have hinted that the falling pass rate in 2014 will, for a number of reasons including more challenging exam papers, continue this year.

A lot of expectations are pinned on the results, which could lead to university or a better job. A department spokesman said the department has made counsellors available for matriculants who may need support.

The top students include Namhla Juqu from the Centre of Science and Technology in Khayelitsha, Cape Town; Nosipho Shabane from Springs Girls High School, Springs; as well as Andrew Tucker, who was diagnosed with Guillan-Barre syndrome and almost had to postpone his matric after missing months of school.

In this video, some of the students like Andrew Tucker talk about their achievements:

Mpho Mokoena from the Alafang Secondary School in Katlehong, east of johannesburg, got seven distinctions. He posted a video on Instagram thanking those who had helped him.
