“It has proven its value as a highly successful event to market Johannesburg to a huge international audience,” said Bongi Mokaba, the events management director of the competition.

The tournament is broadcast to television audiences in 35 countries and, according to the official website, it provides the city of gold a chance to market its rich culture and facilities.

Executive Mayor Mpho Parks Tau said it was “a valuable opportunity to showcase the city as a world-class golf and leisure destination”.

Prize money

The total prize purse of €1.5-million (R27-million) is shared among all players who make the halfway cut, with the winner walking away with the sought-after trophy and more than €200 000.

More than 200 golfers from across the world will tee off for the first round, with the top 70 scores at the halfway mark, qualifying for the final two rounds.

The tournament also helps with the development of golf in previously disadvantaged communities. The professional golfers host training and development classes at the Alexandra driving range, in the north-west of Johannesburg.
