The Cell C Sharks – who this weekend became South Africa’s only unbeaten Super Rugby side – have put their might behind the Rhinos without Borders initiative… to increase awareness of the poaching crisis and raise funds to help 100 rhino be safely translocated to Botswana.

With rhino poaching in South Africa reaching epic proportions, Botswana is proving to be a “safe haven”. Through the Rhinos without Borders campaign, two batches of rhino have already been safely translocated – by air – and safely released in their new habitat.

According to the Cell C Sharks website, a number of the players spent a week at the Phinda Private Game Reserve in January “working closely with rangers, the anti-poaching unit, vets and other staff members at the reserve to see what goes on and also to provide hands-on assistance.

“Players involvement amongst others, ranged from the darting of rhinos to the relocation of some 240 catfish from dams severely affected by the drought.”

A documentary about their visit is due to be broadcast in the coming months.

To increase awareness, Sharks’ mascot ‘Sharkie’ is now accompanied at home matches by a Rhinos Without Borders’ baby Rhino mascot.

On Saturday the Sharks became the only unbeaten franchise, after the first three rounds, when they defeated the DHL Stormers 18-13 at Newlands; whilst the Toyota Cheetahs claimed their first victory of the season in a nail-biting match against the Sunwolves in Singapore. Both Emirates Lions (against the Highlanders in Dunedin) and Southern Kings (against Chiefs in Port Elizabeth) suffered defeats.

The Durban side has now won six in a row.
