The highly popular Cape Epic mountain bike race was barely over this weekend when 100 early bird slots for the 2017 event were sold in just nine seconds, the organisers said.

“People around the world were obviously ready to press the ‘submit’ button when they opened at at 3pm,” said race CEO Lynn Naudé. “And seconds later they had all been taken.”

Follow the 2016 Cape Epic Route that riders took from Meerendal to Tulbagh:

For the 2016 race 1,200 entrants from 55 countries took part. A total of 110 km of the 654 km route was made up of singletrack trails as the eight-days of riding took participants from Meerendal Wine Estate to Tulbagh, Wellington, Stellenbosch and back to Meerendal Wine Estate in Durbanville.

Special on the race this year were South African mother-daughter team Mikayla and Nicky Webb who did the race to raise awareness and funds for a cancer foundation CANSA. The event was won by German Karl Platt (for the fifth time) and his Swiss teammate Urs Huber.

Entries for the first ever Cape Epic in 2004 sold out in three days. The next year they were all snapped up in four hours and 51 minutes. In 2010 the early bird system was introduced – selling out in less time each year.

There is a lottery open until May 30, 2016, for people still interested in taking a chance on getting a slot.
