A day after President Jacob Zuma made his much-derided and much-criticised apology to the nation over Nkandla, one of his ministers was booed off the stage at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival.

Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa came on stage before the performance of SA duo Mafikizolo on Saturday, but was quickly met with jeers and, according to one report, “lewd gestures”. (Watch video at the end.)

His ministry is one of the sponsors of the three-day festival, which has apparently drawn 40,000 people so far, one of the most successful events in its 17 years. British actor Idris Elba made a surprise appearance, and the award-winning duo from Mali, Amadou and Mariam, were one of the highlight acts.

Said one person on Twitter, “I wonder how Zuma is going to talk during the election.”
