Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane was joined by Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille and other party leaders in the Rand Stadium in Johannesburg as they launched the party’s election manifesto on Saturday.

In his speech to a crowd of between 20,000 and 25,000, Maimane focused on the party’s six-pronged election platform of “opportunity, responsive government, service delivery, honest government, redress and safety”.

The DA has been releasing figures at the same time of how its metro areas (especially Cape Town and Midvaal) have come out substantially ahead of other parties’ cities, whether it is the rate of unemployment, the rate of title deed transfers, or the development of innovative projects, including in the tech field.

Maimane said that the majority of the top-rated municipalities in the country were DA-controlled.

The DA is setting its sights on getting a foothold in ANC-contolled metros that have been losing support since before the last election, namely Tshwane/Pretoria, Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth.

The DA also launched a video showing what it has done in its municipalities:
