The announcement that the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) will be investigating the woman at the centre of the #RacistRant video has been welcomed by South Africans around the country.

The video footage of the woman which was taken in February this year – but appears to have only been uploaded to YouTube yesterday, on the 40th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising – shows the woman ranting about black people in Johannesburg, who she claims are of a different “calibre” to those in Durba. She also refuses the help of black policemen; and threatens to run over and shoot black people.

Her rant is laden with foul language and racist insults including the k-word. (Watch below.)

The visibly upset woman has been identified as estate agent Vicki Momberg (listen to her mother talking about the shock below). Vicki had just been the victim of a smash and grab incident, and had – according to her – called the Johannesburg police 50 times with no response for help.

According to eNCA journalist Karyn Maughan, Vicki says “she was ‘surprised’ @eNCA aired video of her racist rant, and is consulting her lawyers over the issue”.

The SAHRC tweeted this afternoon that they are “investigating footage of woman calling JHB cops the k-word” and that they are “shocked and angered” by her comments.

According to reports a case of crimen injuria was opened against the women at Douglasdale Police Station.

SABC news reporter Thabiso Sithole tweeted a message to SA Police Services (SAPS) asking “if the 2 Officers from Douglasdale opened a case then [in February] Why no arrest, it’s JUNE already!!”

He also tweeted a message to Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa asking why SAPS did “not arrest her on the Spot. Inciting violence & her racist remarks toward the Black Officer?”

The Minister tweeted that the racism caught on the video is “appalling and has no place in our society”.

Opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA) tweeted: “The investigation of the disgusting #RacistRant is very welcome.  This has no place in SA, full stop.”

The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) has called for the woman to be charged with hate speech.
