The Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate Athol Trollip addressed DA supporters outside the election results centre in Zwide after it became apparent the DA had won the most votes in the metro. (Watch video below). Meanwhile it’s neck and neck for the country’s leading parties – the DA and the ruling African National Congress (ANC) – in Johannesburg and Tshwane.

As the parties battle it out, several South Africans have tweeted that these results show that the citizens of the country are teaching the #ANC how democracy works – “it’s about what WE want, not what YOU want” said one, summing up a popular sentiment.

Yusum Abramjee tweeted: “Let this be the biggest wake-up call ever. People are fed-up with arrogance, factions, poor leadership & non-delivery.”

The DA is leading in Tshwane, with 44.35% followed by the ANC with 41.07% and the EFF sitting around 10% of the votes.

In Ekurhuleni, the ANC leads with 48.31%.

In the City of Johannesburg, the ANC have 41.92%, the DA 41.48% and the EFF just over 10%.

The DA was victorious in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro, in the Eastern Cape with 46.65%, the ANC with 40.99% and EFF with 5.07%.

In Buffalo City, the ANC is at 58.62%, the DA at 23.47% and the EFF at 7.99%

For the EThekwini metro in KwaZulu-Natal, the ANC has won outright majority, sitting at 55.6% of the votes, with 92% of votes counted.

In the Mangaung metro in the Free State, the ANC is at 56.52%, the DA at 25.96% and the EFF at 8.66%.

In the City of Cape Town, the DA is at 67.28%, the ANC at 23.65% and the EFF at 3.15%.

The current results are set to change as more results are expected to trickle in on day two of vote counting at the National Results Operation Centre in Pretoria.
