Anees Hassan and six fellow SACS High scholars gave up their vacation to mentor learners in Maths and Physics at an underprivileged school in the Eastern Cape.

During a radio interview about his award, Anees acknowledged his SACS and Rondebosch  peers and the people around him.

“Proud of him as parents,” Shafick Hassan, father of Anees, told SAPeople. “The experience has opened a new world for them. Anees has committed himself to the project for three years [until matric] and hopefully many more years thereafter.”

SACS High School partnered up with Rondebosch Boys High School and Rustenburg Girls High School on this year’s Outreach programme to the heart of the Wild Coast, to learn from them.

Rondebosch have been implementing the programme at Isolomzi High, resulting in an incredible improvement from a 40% Matriculant pass rate to now above 90%. SACS hopes to emulate this with Zanewonga High, starting from scratch next year

The experience benefits not only the underprivileged schools but the mentors themselves who go through personal growth and establish connections for life.

Anees’ greatest joy came from teaching his peers the subjects he loves. And it turns out Anees is not just academically strong. He plays sport, is a trumpeter in the SACS concert band; and is a junior city councillor… and adapts seamlessly to these many challenges.

We asked his father if he had any tips on how the rest of us can raise such an inspiring young South African…sacs

“As a parent you always strive to give the best to your children and serve as good role models to them.

“Furthermore, your children should be given the space and support to pursue their ambitions.

“From an early age our two boys were always taught to show respect and be courteous to their fellow human beings. This has carried them a long way.”
