In a press statement, SAFA said his brother Mark Tovey confirmed the incident, adding that the former Bafana Bafana captain was in critical condition and doctors were battling hard to stabilise him.

“He suffered a heart attack while training this afternoon (Sunday, 16 October 2016) and was rushed to hospital. We await the doctor’s report and the next few hours are going to be critical,” said Mark Tovey.

Neil Tovey is the only white man to have captained an Africa Cup of Nations-winning team.

The inspirational sportsman – whose Twitter profile says “Luck happens when opportunity meets preparation – captained his team to a 2-0 victory over Tunisia in the 1996 final in Soweto, in front of a packed stadium of 80,000 people… which included Nelson Mandela who was then President of South Africa.

Tonight SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan said he was shocked to learn about Tovey’s heart attack and wished the SAFA TD a speedy recovery.

“We trust he will pass through this challenge.”
