LOS ANGELES – LA residents woke up this morning to a slightly different version of their famed ‘HOLLYWOOD’ sign. Overnight it has been transformed to read ‘HOLLYWeeD’, perhaps by someone who smoked a little Hollyweed!

At this stage, nobody has claimed responsibility (or is likely to!). According to reports in American media, it’s either a New Year’s Eve prank and/or a celebration of the first year of California’s new marijuana law… allowing the use of recreational marijuana after the passing of Proposition 64.

Whoever did it, did it ‘peacefully’ – the first ‘e’ has a peace sign stuck to it, and the second ‘e’ has lovehearts on it.

The #Hollyweed hashtag is going crazy on Twitter and making news around the world, with headlines like CNN’s “The Hollywood sign got a little green over New Year’s”.

This isn’t the first time the iconic sign has read ‘Hollyweed’. Back in 1976 – also early on New Year’s Day – an art student changed the sign to celebrate a relaxing of the marijuana laws.

The legendary sign was first built back in 1923 and has been featured in over 150 movies and TV shows. It’s protected by the Hollywood Sign Trust for fans from around the world who often make a pilgrimage to the sign.

On viewing the new signage, one Twitter user declared: “I think 2017 is gonna be good!”
