According to Sport24 the future of Allister Coetzee as Springbok coach is under question. In a report Sunday morning, Sport24 quoted South African Rugby (SARU) President Mark Alexander as saying “we’re not sure which way we’re going, whether we’re keeping Allister or not”.

After the Springboks’ historic losses in Europe last year (including to Italy for the first time ever), it was rumoured that SARU could not fire Coetzee as the organisation didn’t have the R13-million reportedly required to end the contract.

However Sport24 quote Alexander as saying: “We still have presentations to go through but no formal decision has been made on whether we’re going forward with him or not. At the end of January we’ll make an announcement on whether we’re keeping him.”

Alexander revealed that several overseas coaches have shown an interest in the position; and that SARU has been busy with some “seriously big decisions” on how to best improve the Springboks in order to win the next World Cup in 2019. He said SARU has consulted with rugby experts from South Africa and around the world.

We’re not sure what type of coach we want and what style we want to play. You have to remember that it’s not just one man – it’s a whole coaching team,” he said.

Along with the decision on Coetzee, Alexander said SARU will also make an announcement at the end of the month on its policy towards foreign-based players.
