After stumbling against England at the Sydney Sevens Tournament in Australia yesterday, South Africa took sweet revenge in the Finals Sunday to beat England 29-14… and scoop the Springbok Sevens’ THIRD 2016/2017 World Rugby Sevens title.

Reporting for SASCOC, Mark Etheridge said “the Blitzboks blasted into the final of the Sydney Sevens tournament on Sunday with wins against the United States (21-10) and hosts Australia (26-12) in the semi-final… on a scorching Sydney afternoon.”

Tries were scored by Stephan Dippenaar, who had flown into Australia from Joburg on Thursday, Seabelo Senatla, captain Philip Snyman and Justin Geduld with conversions by Branco du Preez.

Senatla, who now leaves 7s to join 15-man Stormers for the foreseeable future, won Man of the Match. He said: “It’s an incredible way to end it off for both Kwagga [Smith] and me in both our last sevens tournament, it’s really nice to end it off like this.

“But credit must go to my teammates… it’s them who open the game up. They are the magicians, credit to them. I’m just the finisher…

He said “leaving sevens for 15’s is a bitter-sweet feeling, we love each other and are like brothers, this team but at the same time I’m excited for my new challenge.”

Snyman said after the win: “Thanks to the whole of Sydney and hats off to my team. We stuck to the structures and it worked for us.”

He praised England for playing “phenomenal rugby” and added: “This win was extra-special as it’s our first back-to-back Series wins in Australasia. Once again hats off to everyone in our system, our families back home, all the messages of support etc.. they all count.”

This is the Blitzboks’ third win of four tournaments. They now lead the series with 85 points.
