South African comedian and US ‘Daily Show’ host Trevor Noah cracked a joke about President Jacob Zuma yesterday… but not everyone got it.

Trevor said: “People need to stop hating on President Jacob Zuma. Of all our democratically elected presidents he’s easily in the top 3! SONA2017.”

Some reports thought he was defending Zuma in the lead up to Thursday’s State of the Nation Address.

On facebook, one user said “a moment of silence for those who don’t get this”.

Because of course it was a joke. South Africa has only ever had three democratically elected presidents: Nelson Mandela (1994-1999), Thabo Mbeki (1999-2008) and Jacob Zuma (2009-).

Kgalema Motlanthe was President for eight months (2008-2009) but he was elected by the National Assembly, following Mbeki’s resignation. And South Africa briefly had a female president – Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri – who served as acting president in 2005 when Mbeki and the Deputy President were outside of the country. She was also chosen by cabinet to be head of state for the 14 hours between Mbeki’s resignation and Motlanthe’s taking of office.
