To celebrate International Women’s Day today, Lisa Ashton – founder of the Winnia Mabaso Foundation in Gauteng – has sent a special message from the UK for a group of “extraordinary South African women making the world a better place”.

The WMF helps those in need from children to Grannies.

Lisa said: “Today I am thinking about the extraordinary group of women who work and volunteer for us in South Africa. The women who day in and day out work tirelessly to make the world a better place.

“I can’t think of a better bunch to represent the WMF and am truly grateful for each and every one of them.”

She added special thanks to team manager Helga Lewis.

“Helga works harder than you will ever know,” says Lisa. “I tend to post the positive news and photos but I’m sure you can imagine there is so much more that goes on behind the scenes – the sad, difficult and frustrating days that Helga supports me through. She is my rock and every single day I am thankful for who she is and for what she does. Enjoy your day ladies – you are the best! #mabasolove.”

This year’s International Women’s Day is commemorated under the theme “Be Bold For Change”, a call on all global citizens to help forge a more inclusive, gender equal world.

Radio presenter Alex Jay said: “I’m proud to say I was raised in a home full of women who helped shape my world view. Thank you, ladies and happy International Women’s Day.”

The South African Government tweeted: “We honour and appreciate significant strides made under the flagship of International women’s movement.”

And one of South Africa’s favourite female role models, Advocate Thuli Madonsela said: “Happy #InternationalWomensDay to all the women of the world, #BeBoldForChange Claim your authentic place in the world.”

Most people retweeted the popular message: “Here’s to strong women. May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them.”
