The raging Durban Fire at Transnet Warehouse continues to burn Saturday morning, 24 hours after it began at approximately 09h30 Friday 24 March 2017.
This morning, at 10h00, eThekwini Municipality reported that “since our last update, the fire has been contained to the wax area only. As more updates come from the team, we will update you.”
#DurbanFire UPDATE: Here is an official update from eThekwini Municipality at 10h55:
“EThekwini fire-fighters worked through the night to stabilise and contain the fire incident at a factory on Southcoast Road, Rossburgh.
“They averted a possible disaster situation. Due to unfavourable weather conditions, the fire at the factory could not be extinguished and was spreading rapidly throughout the factory.
“Last night, upon realising that the fire was spreading to other sections of the factory that contained matter such as fertiliser, hay bales and ammonium, Municipal officials immediately advised factories and petrol stations in the vicinity to evacuate and closed off the M4, M7 and Southcoast Road.
“The fire-fighters then separated the already burnt containers from the ones unaffected, in a bid to stop the fire from spreading further. This exercise proved successful and at around 04h00 this morning, the fire was contained.
“Although the fire is still alight, officials are confident that it has been contained to the area already destroyed and there is no possibility of a further spread.
“Extinguishing efforts are still ongoing. In the event that members of the community come into contact with the smoke, they are advised to stay indoors and close windows and doors (shelter in place) and ensure that air conditioning systems are switched off. Tune into local radio stations for further warnings and notifications.”
On Friday evening, the Municipality said it had 41 fire vehicles on site – 35 fire trucks and 6 support vehicles; as well as over 125 fire personnel on duty.
Despite fighting the flames for 24 hours, the ‘inferno’ has continue to blaze through the night in what is reported to be the biggest fire Durban firefighters have ever had to face.
Gift of the Givers delivered food and beverages to the fire fighters last night.
Three firefighters were treated for minor burns yesterday, and there have thankfully been no civilians injured.
The cause of the fire will be investigated once the fire is completely out.
