The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it will be asking the Public Protector to investigate Eskom CEO Matshela Koko’s alleged awarding of “tenders worth R1 billion to his Impulse International, a company of which his step-daughter is a Director”.

Impulse International was apparently awarded eight contracts by Eskom’s Generation unit during Koko’s tenure as the unit’s Group Executive.

Although his stepdaughter – Koketso Choma (26) – was appointed director at Impulse last year, and despite her living in the same home as him, Koko denies knowing that she was involved with Impulse.

But rather than letting him off the hook, this denial – say the DA – just proves Koko is “compromised and unfit to be the head of Eskom”.

Natasha Mazzone MP, DA Shadow Minister of Public Enterprises, said: “By claiming that he was not aware that his step-daughter was involved with Impulse International, Koko inadvertently admits that he failed in his role as the Chief Accounting officer to conduct due diligence on the company profile of a potential Eskom service provider.

“This potentially means that Eskom violated State Procurement guidelines set out by Treasury to guide the acquisition of services by State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) under Koko’s stewardship.

“The DA believes that this latest expose could be one of the reasons why Eskom board has been reluctant to release the Denton report.”

The DA says it is unacceptable that while Eskom is trying to raise capital for some of its projects to grow South Africa’s economy, “its managers could be busy siphoning cash to benefit family members”.

Koko claims as soon as he discovered the conflict of interest, his stepdaughter resigned her position and has not been director of Impulse since October 2016. He says he was not part of the deals because he doesn’t work in procurement, and insists “I don’t believe I am compromised.” Watch below.
