As in many parts of the world, the friction between Uber drivers and metered taxi drivers continues in South Africa, with an Uber Taxi apparently set alight by metered taxi drivers on Sandton Driver, outside the Gautrain on Thursday afternoon.

According to Intelligence Bureau SA (IBSA), the Fire Brigade attended the incident this afternoon in Johannesburg.

South African Police Services (SAPS) officers were also on the scene as there were also reports of fights between the metered taxi drivers and the tuk tuk drivers on West, said IBSA.

The facebook page also posted a photo of a ‘scuffle’ between metered taxis and “possibly Uber” outside the Sandton City Gautrain Station and said: “Look carefully at how many vehicles are being searched. Men being beaten with sticks and shamboks. Literally 2 minutes later cops came running down and had everything under control in a matter of seconds!”

Earlier this month, on 10 March 2017, metered taxis brought the highway to OR Tambo International Airport to a standstill in a protest to demand that Uber be regulated. Supporters of Uber pointed out that registered taxis in South Africa have “poor, unreliable and expensive services”… and that many Uber users had never been taxi passengers anyway.
