South African Airways cabin crew have gone ahead with a peaceful strike, demanding better food. As one of the placards says: “Keep the Chicken, This is Serious Beef.”

Passengers due to fly today are advised to contact SAA on 011 978 1111 or 0861 606 606 or your nearest ‘Town Office’ for flight updates, rescheduling or any other queries they may have.

About 85 % of the cabin crew are striking to put pressure on SAA to increase their meal allowance. It’s currently R1,711 per day ($131), and has not been reviewed for six years according to the SA Cabin Crew Association (SACCA).

The Union – which represents 1,300 of the 1,700 SAA crew members – is asking for the allowance to be increased by no less than R352… but SAA is only offering an extra R84.90, said SACCA Secretary General Mpho Moikangoa.

He said: “We spend 20 days out of the country and the hotels we sleep in are expensive and we can’t afford breakfast at times. We are forced to eat at places like McDonald’s.”

The strike is taking place outside SAA’s headquarters in Kempton Park, Gauteng.

One passenger affected by today’s strike, Troy Smith, said at around 11h05: “Terrible experience with multiple delays with SAA out of JNB -> VFA (26/4/17). Feeling very frustrated right now and the ground-staff have no answers…”
