The security guard that was shot and wounded in the Nyanga Junction hostage standoff on Monday 1 May in Cape Town, has tragically succumbed to his injuries in hospital this morning.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) made the announcement at 11h00 on Tuesday.

Yesterday National Police Acting Commissioner Lieutenant General Khomotso Phahlane had thanked operational members who saved the 10 hostages in Nyanga in Cape Town.

Police on Monday managed to free 10 hostages after a day-long stand-off following an attempted armed robbery at Nyanga Junction Shopping Centre on the Cape Flats.

The attempted armed robbery at a Shoprite supermarket turned into a hostage drama, which saw several employees being held inside the supermarket.

Various specialised police units attended the scene, including SAPS hostage negotiators.

Yesterday SAPS reported that a suspect, had been wounded by security personnel during the initial attempted armed robbery. According to some reports this morning, the suspect has died. SAPS has no confirmed this.

The 10 hostages were later released by the robbers.

General Phahlane thanked the SAPS operational members for risking their lives, as well as members of the community for their support and prayers during the nail-biting police operation.

“We again assure those that we serve, that all precautions were taken to ensure the safe release of the hostages – that was our primary objective and we are thankful to our skilled and dedicated members that this was achieved,” said General Phahlane.

Minister of Police, Fikile Mbalula, will today visit Nyanga Junction Mall.
