The body of Karabo Mokoena, who was allegedly murdered by her 27-year-old boyfriend Sandile Mantsoe, was laid to rest in Westpark Cemetry in South Africa today.

The funeral service of the 22-year-old – whose charred remains were found in a shallow grave – was aired nationally… her death symbolic of what appears to be an increasing number of violent crimes against females in the country.

Popi Qwabe and Bongeka Phungula’s bodies were dumped on Friday and Saturday in Tladi and Naledi. Two other women’s bodies were found in Soweto. The burnt body of 15-year-old Nombuyiselo Nombeu was found on Sunday, Mother’s Day, in Klerksdorp, North West. Those are just some of the many…

Yesterday President Jacob Zuma visited the family of three-year-old Courtney Pieters, who was raped twice before being brutally murdered in Elsies River, Cape Town… by 40-year-old family friend, Mortimer Saunders.

Zuma expressed horror at the rate at which children and women are being “murdered and raped by men… What is new now is that they’re being killed by people they know…”

The African National Congress (ANC) issued a statement calling on society to organise against violence on women, noting the “increase in reports of mostly young women dying gruesome deaths at the hands of their intimate partners.”

The ANC called on the SA Police Service to hunt down and “bring to book the perpetrators of these heinous crimes”.

The party also called on “men in particular to reject and actively organize against this scourge which robs us of our mothers and sisters; our nation’s pride.”

Karabo’s sister delivered a very emotional speech today in which she called her sister “so bold” and said “I will love you for the rest of my life”.

An old friend recalled how Karabo had dreamt of being famous one day. She said it is tragic that her fame has come from such a sad event.

South Africans are hoping she represents the turning point. That finally #EnoughIsEnough. That real men will stand up to the disrespecting men, that parents will work together to raise strong daughters and honourable sons, that the government, police and all of South African society will rally together to make the future safer and better for all its citizens.
