A video of a man – known as the ‘White Zulu’ – at the Caltex Crompton petrol station in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal, is going viral amongst South Africans for the wonderful way in which he crosses racial boundaries with love and laughter.

The owners of the petrol station told SAPeople they hired Tim Boettiger (52) to help promote their latest competition in which customers who spend R30 can win prizes.

“My dad always used Tim Boettiger, many years ago when he had a butchery, because he is such a fun character and completely fluent in Zulu… and so we decided to use him again for the promotion,” said Greg Miller.

Wearing a traditional Zulu outfit, Tim promotes away in perfect Zulu and performs a Zulu dance… which causes quite a few belly laughs, along with a song he sings in Zulu which apparently asks for the surname of a woman who is not wearing underwear!

Tim is also known by the Zulu name Ndlovu (which means Elephant).

Those who know him have shared the video saying: “As always Timothy Boettiger, entertainment & professionalism at the highest level” and one expat, Tracy Sinclair Naess, wrote: “Ngiyazi lokhu umfana (I’m sure I recognise him!). I miss moments like these in South Africa… and that sure looks and sounds a lot like Tim Boettiger ;-)”

Here’s a longer video (although no dancing)
