Miss South Africa, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, posted a video late Wednesday evening explaining why she was wearing gloves to hand out food to young children, and apologising to those who were offended.

Demi-Leigh took part in a charity soup drive in Soweto yesterday as a volunteer… but was ridiculed, criticised and chastised for wearing gloves. The children were black and it was insinuated by what’s known as ‘black twitter’ that she was being racist by wearing gloves. Photos posted on social media showed her with white children and no gloves.

However, other photos soon emerged of Miss SA with black children and no gloves; and of other volunteers yesterday who were black… and also wearing gloves.

The Miss SA organisation tweeted that all volunteers had been asked to wear gloves for hygienic purposes. And as any South African expat knows, around the world it is very normal (and often expected) that people handing out food wear gloves.

Last night Demi-Leigh posted the video below to Twitter saying: “To everyone asking about the gloves, I truly hope that you’ll hear my heart and understand that it came from a place of wanting to do good.”

She apologised if she offended anyone and explained her intentions were misunderstood, and that the most important moral of the day had been that “300 kids got a proper warm lunch”.
