According to News24 a mechanical failure meant the system had to be shut down, and 15 people rescued with safety harnesses from three gondolas whilst another 125 visitors had to be transferred from the top of the mountain.

Cableway General Manager Iain Gunn told News24: “We had about 125 people on top of the mountain having pizzas and hamburgers, unaware that they had stopped the cable.”

Children and older people were evacuated via helicopter whilst the rest were taken by emergency vehicles.

The rescue was swift and “ran like clockwork”, Gunn told News24.

The cableway will remain closed while engineers investigate the cause of the failure.
